The Route

Over 600 years ago, a man who became a king had ambitions to reign over the biggest empires in Europe as Emperor. He decided to build a city worthy of being a capital, a city that would be known the world over for centuries to come. This man was Charles IV. The city was Prague.

In our free castle tour, we will start our adventure with one of the most magnificent architectural marvels, the Charles Bridge. This landmark has united the two sides of the city since the 14th century and is one of Charles IV’s greatest achievements.

After crossing the bridge, we make our way through Mala Strana, a stunning Baroque quarter. We will wander its old streets to Kampa Island and the John Lennon Wall, revealing much of Prague’s past.

From there, we make our way via tram to Prague Castle, just like the locals! The castle is on a fortified location on a hill – overlooking the entire city for centuries. Once atop, we wander through this district, then through the walls into the castle grounds themselves. It is the largest castle complex in the world. Get ready to roam through picturesque courtyards: learn about legendary figures like Rudolph II, Holy Roman Emperor, who was at once a madman and great king, and Maria Theresa, a Hapsburg who brought freedom to the women of Bohemia.

We, of course, encounter the impressive Cathedral of St Vitus. Discover the thousand-year-long history of the lands where this cathedral sits today, its secrets and stories.

The wealth of history that surrounds the castle is impossible to detail in a short description. The only way to find out more is to join us on our Free Castle Tour!

Accessible by stroller or wheelchair and, of course, the youngest (and furriest) members of the family are welcome too.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Bookings of over 8 people (or multiple bookings amounting to over 8) are not accepted on our free tours. Please contact us via email at to organise your tour with us. We look forward to welcoming you.

We were so fortunate to have Paul as a guide this afternoon during our Castle Tour of Prague. He is engaging, knowledgeable, caring, and a lot of fun to hang with for 2 1/2 hours. It's obvious that he enjoys what he does and wants to make visitors' … More experiences of the city as interesting and dynamic as a possible. He's clear with his information and has an impressive breadth of Prague's history. We were in good hands and appreciate how hard he worked (although it all seemed seamless on his part) to provide a lovely and awesome afternoon for us. Five stars!!

Very very good walking tour of Prague Old Town and Jewish Quarter. It's one thing that you are in a beautiful city like Prague but if someone can show you around and narrate it's history in a way that makes you understand and appreciate the … More beauty even more, it makes it that much more interesting. In that, our guide Sean excelled himself. Sean is an excellent guide, very knowledgeable, patient, resourceful and good humoured. We enjoyed every bit of this tour and would highly recommend to anyone (thinking of doing this tour). There is no pre-payment and they work purely on voluntary tips basis, relying on the generosity of their customers.

Scott is amongst the best guides that I have seen in my travel history thus far. His remarkable knowledge about the history of Europe, Prague in particular, helps us understand the nuances of politics, architecture and culture that existed about 1000 … More years back. His narration is fascinating, and I as a listener did not feel disinterested even once. He is witty, and connects events in a way that helps us grasp the contexts easily. 10/10 would recommend a walking tour by 12yours organization, and Scott in particular.

During our trip in Prague, we really enjoyed the old town tour with Ian as our tour guide. He was very enthusiastic about the city and its history. The extra information about the Jewish quarter was very interesting. This convinced us to visit the Jewish … More museum and synagogues. We appreciated his list of restaurant recommendations.Due to our nice experience with both the tour guide and the company, we decided to take the walking tour to Prague castle the next day. Sarah shared nice facts about the castle and the city and was funny. We’d recommend booking your free walking tour with 12Tours!

We enjoyed the tour so much we took a tour of a different part of Prague the … More next day with the same company, this time with Paul.
